Unlike the small, fine conical baskets made by aristocratic Tutsi women, there are any number of coarser quotidian utilitarian weavings, that were made by Tutsi ‘commoners’ and also by the Hutu people, such as this multi-purpose woven mat with the ishobi design. Woven mats were used as blinds, room dividers, and coverings. They were produced in traditional workshops and in domestic settings.

This example relates closely to one in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, (accession no:. 2011.6). While this piece is longer (226 cms)and has six diagonal ishobi bands, the Met example is 160 cms long and has only three bands of design.
