Mats are widely used in traditional Southern African daily life. In this case the mat is embellished with rows of coloured beads. This lifts them from everyday usage and suggests their use in a Zulu marriage ceremony (Umabo) as a special gift. Simpler, undecorated grass mats were laid on the floor leading to the marital bed.
