This woman's shawl has a lovely soft and heavy handle. It would have been worn covering the head and draping down over the shoulders.

The shawl was originally woven in a natural color wool with the decorative brocading and end stripes done in a wool of a different weight that was more resistant to the dye. The ends were dyed red and then circles were tied off with the entire shawl then being dyed indigo. After the indigo bath the resisted areas were untied and remained red with the brocading remaining a lighter blue.
