Condition

Fragile linen ground, stains and other problems.

It must be said that this lovely old suzani is in very delicate condition. The embroidery is fine, the colours have held but the linen ground is fragile, grimy and stained. We have long loved it and pondered whether to attempt restoring it or not and have decided against. In the end we decided that its aesthetic virtues transcend the vicissitudes that it has endured in the 160 years or more it has been around. We have thus left the conservation option open to whoever may want to own it.

It is remarkably small for a Nurata suzani; it is only (62ins x 43ins) and, as is seldom the case, it is in its original state - the green silk fringe and linen backing are those used when the piece was made - and, needless to say, it has never been cleaned or repaired.

Condition aside, it is an exquisite miniaturised rendering of a traditional Nurata suzani design - we have yet to find a better drawn version of the eight pointed central medallion on other similarly designed suzanis. The fourteen floral sprays surrounding the medallion are executed with delicacy and arranged with a refined spatial sensibility - quite an achievement on so small a piece. The formality of the diamond leaf border contrasts with the informality of the field.
