These dome shaped hats were worn by both men and women as can be seen on figural silks, Persian miniatures and portraits of the period. This example is made of a refined Persian chintz with a boteh pattern. Boteh patterns in India developed in the 19th century but are seen earlier in Iran with 18th century examples. The hat is finely quilted with stylized Cypress tree motifs.
