This kimono typifies 1920’s, taisho mode kimono. The design like many others is made up of two overlayed planes on a black ground, one floral, the other green geometric yabane, arrow fletches. Yabane were one of the most popular motifs of the period. The floral layer is composed of oversize spidery chrysanthemums flanked by camellias. Silver lacquered threads, urushi, highlight the centers of the chrysanthemums.

Used kimonos were taken to kimono dealers who disassembled the kimonos cleaned, repaired and reassembled them moving the damaged parts to a less noticeable part of the kimono. This has happened here with the repairs at the side seams towards the hem. It has been relined.
