This representation of the classic Japanese design, shochikubai, the three friends of winter; pine, bamboo and plum was hugely influenced by French Art Deco designs from the 1920s. The normally dominant motifs of pine and bamboo, representing strength, resiliency and longevity have become minor background motifs on this kimono. The plum flower, representing perseverance and purity has a pure floral Deco feel. The stamens have become geometric dashes a precursor to more purely abstract shapes to follow.
