mountain peaks, sanjou with clouds

The motif of mountain peaks rising above the clouds once again highlights the change in scale of motifs in the Taisho period (1912-1926). In 19th century kimono design the sanjou motif would have been a part of a more extensive and fully realized landscape design. What would have been a small subsidiary motif has been picked out, blown up in scale and used as a repeat to cover the surface of the kimono.
