wisteria flowers, fuji on a water stream, ryusui background

This kimono shows a third variation of the water stream, ryusui motif. This time the flowing stream of water serves as a background to voluptuous, thrusting, brightly coloured wisteria blossoms. A band of hand-tied bright blue weft accentuates the strong horizontal feeling of the flowers. A softer blue, done in a painterly manner, contrasting with a strong black outline, edges the bright blue centre of the flowers. Floral motifs overlaying ground designs was a popular design format in the 1920’s as were strong contrasting colours
