This design is very similar to patchwork, although it is woven not pieced. In the Momoyama period in Japan men wore patchwork garments. The patchwork was a symbol of longevity as the pieces used to make the garment had an extended life. As an alternate or additional influence in Europe in the early 20th century many artists such as Duncan Grant in England, Sonia Delauney in France and Anni Albers in Germany, just to name a few, experimented with blocks of color and geometric designs.
