The basic layout of this design is based on a Noh robe format called dan gawari, a design based on alternating blocks of colour, here blocks of flowers and scrolling vegetation alternates with blocks of muted purple. Lush full peonies with geometric centres decorate the interstices. Purple was a popular colour for women’s garments in the late Meiji and Taisho periods.
