Images of Victory

Images of victory In battle were often portrayed in a straightforward manner – soldiers with arms raised, waving flags and yelling “banzai!” (hurray!). But victory was also portrayed in a more oblique ways, with symbols; red and white chochin (victory lanterns) shown in clusters or floating through the designs, sometimes emblazoned with the words – dai shori (big victory) or the name of a particular battle. Kimono with victory symbols were made throughout the 30s and up to 1942 when the war started to turn against the Japanese.
