It is on the earlier textiles, dating from the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese Wars, that tend to portray military heroes and leaders. General Togo, famous for defeating the Russian fleet in 1905 is probably the most known figure and appears on several pieces in the collection. Commemorative textiles, showing his exploits were produced after his death in 1934. Another popular heroic event that appears quite often is the Three Soldiers, the Nikudan Sanyushi, the “human bomb”, famous for holding a pipe-bomb and running into the enemy lines to blast a hole in a barbed-wire fence, thus leading to victory.
