Flags

Flags were widely used and had different meanings. They symbolized allies and enemies, conquered lands and Japan itself. They march in rows across kimono both singly and in clusters, scattered across the field and are both used as primary and secondary motifs. They also show the changing alliances of the time and it is incongruous to modern eyes to see French, British and American Flags fluttering alongside those of Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan.
