This commanding large suzani is an unusual creature and does not seem to be the product of a typical domestic environment. Its size, its large scale unusual design and palette, its pashmina ground and technical excellence suggest, perhaps, a workshop production of a special commission for a person of high stature.

The scale of the piece is remarkable. The main border is 34cms wide and the minor borders 10cms wide and it is almost 3 meters long. The spacious drawing throughout; the sinuous vines in the main border, the beautifully drawn meandering leaves in the minor border and the floral sprays in the corners of the field all have an elegance of drawing that is clearly influenced and inspired by India and the Mughal era.The pashmina ground cloth also suggests strong links with India

The purveyors of contemporary art use the term "wall power" as a qualitative description for various works that...go on walls. This rare, striking and beautiful embroidered work of art has this quality in spades.
