A Tutsi Prestige Earthenware pot
Tutsi or Twa for the Tutsi
This remarkable pot shows European and was probably produced in a workshop for a colonial. Although pots like this and others are very much in the Tutsi aesthetic vernacular, and very often referred to as such, but there is some debate whether they were made by the Twa for the Tutsi. The Twa, also know as the Batwa, are the forest pygmy people of Great Lakes Region of Central Africa. Their pottery which is coiled is of a very high standard and is minimally decorated with the sgraffito technique. Some are burnished. Very few pieces in such good condition appear on the market.
