Incised and the design filled with black

Snuff spoons are generally long, slender and narrow formed to fit into the generally small openings of snuff receptacles. The shape of this bone implement is wider and seems unlikely to have been used for such a purpose. Sweat scrapers were another implement often carved in bone as well and decorated in a similar manner but they have a different shape and we have been unable to establish the use of this finely carved spatula shaped implement. It has been incised and filled with a black substance in the manner typical of Zulu snuff spoons.
