While Tutsi baskets are quite well known by basket and African art aficionados, their carved wooden vessels are much less known. Baskets are woven by women and wooden vessels are carved by men. Often, as in this case, the shape of the wooden vessel mimics the shape of a basket. Indeed, the lip of the body of this example has been notched to echo the woven edge on a basket.
