Provenance

There is the remnant of an old collection label on the back and a number is written on the back of a handle - IC 2.95.

This sleek and sculptural scabbard is composed of wood covered in lizard skin and adorned with beads. In the 19th century craftsmen who specialized in beadwork worked exclusively for the king and members of his family and court. Beaded sculptures, thrones, stools and items of personal adornment were covered in beads, a sign of wealth, power and position. The palette of the beads, blue, red and white was popular during the reign of King Nsangu (1865-1887) and the early years of King Njoya (1887-1933). After the arrival of the Germans to the court in 1902 bead work became more colorful, probably because of an increased supply of brighter beads.
