The Mangbetu were known as accomplished blacksmiths. Skill, precision and a refined sense of aesthetic judgement went into creating this simple yet elegant object. A slender bar of iron has been tapered at one end and the other flattened and honed into a delicate petal-like blade. A simple wrap of copper wire is the only decoration. This sculptural object would have been used as both a hairpin and scarification tool.
