Elongated horn snuff spoons such as this one appear only rarely on the market. At 43.5 cms (17¾ ins) in length is by far the longest of the few we have had. Amongst the Zulu both men and women were enthusiastic consumers of snuff. The snuff-spoons they produced were prestige objects made in a variety of materials, shapes and sizes. They often had a secondary function as hairpins which was both decorative and readily available for use.
