Old Bakongo Ritual Gourd

This deeply carved and robustly decorated gourd was collected by Catholic nuns before the end of the 19th century. It is believed that old gourds such as this were used for some ritual purpose. It would appear that the tops are permanently sealed and in some of them, there is loose matter.
