This rare fibre woven mat in interlocking and slit tapestry technique with a traditional Tutsi inspired design was made in a Catholic mission workshop set up in Central Africa (probably Burundi) in the first part of the 20th century where local people were taught European weaving techniques and presumably produced pieces largely for the local market of Europeans in Africa. Output was probably limited and the somewhat fragile nature of the materials accounts for their rarity.
