This delicate skirt is free-end braided, a technique where all the fiber is held in one place, in this instance tied to the toe of the woman making the skirt and then plaited into a tube shape. The skirt is then resist dyed red and then black using mineral dyes. The intricate tying of the fibres to resist the cloth creates a wonderful texture to the cloth. This example was tied in a rich variety of designs. The yellow color is the natural color of the fiber. These skirts were worn by women for ceremonial occasions.
