This wide beaded waistband was made and then sewn down on to a piece of European fabric. At the time,it would have been an impressive display of beadwork. Beadwork was often given as a gift and as a signifier of both the giver's and recipient's worth, and not least, the skills of the women in the family. The palette is typical of North Nguni pieces of the late 19th century.
