Kikuyu Beaded Leather Belt
Country Of Origin
First half 20th century
95.5 x 3.5 cms (37½ x 1½ ins)
European leather belt, glass beads
A European leather belt has been beaded with the wavy lines and arches used by the Kikuyu and the Maasai. The palette is typical of early 20th century pieces especially the absence the orange and bright green beads used in so many later pieces. It has what look like the beaded initials “KN” at one end suggesting that the belt was decorated for a European.
We had previously attributed this belt to the Maasai but after more research and with the confirmation of our old pal Jeff Spurr we have now settled on the Kikuyu as the attribution.
- There is a very similar piece in the collection of the Museum of Natural History in New York, Catalog No: 90.1/ 7653. It was donated to the museum in 1944.
