This curious basket is woven in two layers. While many Tutsi baskets are woven in two layers, typically the inner layer is woven for strength, to give the basket its structural integrity and the outer layer has the decorative design. The inner layer of this basket however is decorated with a dark, spiraling, geometric design of the type one would expect to find on a Tutsi basket. The outer layer is the natural colour of the dried grass and the design is quite subtle, created by bands of fibre circling the basket horizontally in an overlapping semicircular design. The interior basket appears to be intact so it is a mystery why the outer layer was added.
