Isichumo, 19th Century Zulu Basket
Country Of Origin
21 x 28 cms (8¼ x 11 ins)
Palm leaf and other fibre
ex David Lewin Collection
This rare old basket is woven in the traditional shape of baskets used to store grain or beer. Odd though it may be to think of a fibre basket as a container for liquids, the fibre swells upon contact with the beer and becomes watertight. The elongated checker design covering the body and a starburst decorating the shoulder is done in two tones of brown.
